Close Escorts

Name given to the smallest class of warship in the Imperial navy. Displacing only a few hundred tons, close escorts are little use in a large naval engagement. Instead they are usually assigned to patrol duties, convoy escort, piracy suppression, and other low-intensity operations. The new Gazelle and Fiery class escorts are just coming in to service in the Gateway Quadrant, while the older Cobra class is slowly being phased out. Many of the older close escorts have been sold off to Imperial client states or transferred to Colonial Fleets.
